Module description:
This module assesses leadership in developing the built-in instruments and payloads used to perform scientific analyses. The leader is responsible for taking one or more scientific payloads from concept to a fully integrated and operational state. This role requires a combination of scientific understanding and engineering skill to create instruments that can collect meaningful data in the field.
CANDIDATE PROFILE:
• Lead the design and manufacturing of a specific scientific instrument. • Manage the integration of the payload with the rover’s power, data, and mechanical interfaces. • Develop the software needed to control the payload and acquire data. • Create and perform calibration procedures for the instrument. • Work with the science team to validate that the instrument meets their scientific requirements.

Head of Science (Geology)

Module description:
This module evaluates leadership in directing the geology-focused aspects of the Science Task, primarily the Exploration Sub-Task. The Head of Science (Geology) is responsible for interpreting geological data of the Mars Yard, developing a scientific exploration plan with a testable hypothesis, and leading the on-field mission to gather evidence. This role requires exceptional analytical skills to analyze terrain features and guide the team in producing high-quality scientific reports under strict deadlines.
CANDIDATE PROFILE:
• Analyze geological and topographical data (e.g., drone imagery, Digital Elevated Models) to create a geological map of the Mars Yard. • Formulate a falsifiable scientific hypothesis and a detailed exploration plan to test it. • Lead the rover’s scientific operations during the Exploration Task, identifying key geological features. • Oversee the rapid analysis of collected data and the authoring of the final scientific report. • Apply principles of planetary geology to interpret the simulated Martian environment.
